Way back in the 1950's Crowhurst showed that negative feedback produced higher orders of odd HD that were not present before. It was also already known that the higher the order of odd HD, the more irritating the sound at lower and lower %.
It was proposed, twice, that the measured HD should be weighted so mu,bers would correlate with the fact that upper order odd HD, even at low levels is increasingly more irritating to listen to.
Things would be different (better) today if the calls for doing that would have been excepted but they weren't.
