Does the "modern" 274B rectifier still require 4uf as first capacitor?

I've heard it said that the 274B is a drop in replacement for the 5U4.
According to the data sheets...yeah sure...if you want to fry your rectifier.
Need clarification on how to implement the modern 274B.
