One classic amp, I don't remember the manufacture, used common 1/4in self switching type phone jacks in series with the cathodes. You may remember these on bargain basement old stereo gear, plug in the headphones and the jack swithes off the speakers.
So you make a test cord with a 1/4in phone plug and banana plugs on the other end for your meter. Direct current measurement without any resistor losses (if that even matters). I use 10 ohms myself.
