RE: Self bais without cathode R?

With grid leak bias the electrons are flowing out of the grid through the large value grid leak resistor and to ground so the grid is held negative with regard to ground and the cathode. So grid leak bias is negative just like cathode bias.

In a cathode bias tube the electrons flow up from ground through the cathode resistor to the cathode and then to the plate, producing a positive voltage at the cathode, and with the grid referenced to ground, the grid is negative vs. the cathode.
