This is interesting. Are you using an electrolytic for coupling ?
Either way, coupling or filtering, have you tried a bypass cap, riding in parallel, with your electro ? That can give a faster path for the mids and highs, helping the sonics.
Sometimes, I prefer the very old, dry electrolytic caps, including early Atoms. They seem faster sounding, and rarely require bypass caps.
