Bogen AP 30 integrated - phono stage sounds thin

It's marked MAG PHONO. The tape/tuner/aux inputs sound fine with CD but the phono section sounds distorted and weak. Tube complement is 4 x 7408, 1 12AU7a, 1 12AX7A off by iteself, then 3 more 12AX7A's grouped together. Input is an old AR belt-drive that sounds fine with my other receiver. I replaced all the 12A... tubes with others I had on hand. Could this just be bad caps or something? What to check?
Also, the volume pot affects balance in a not-so-nice intermittent way requiring fiddling. Will I be able to find a replacement pot for this? Thanks a million.
