Power pentode/beam tetrode screen voltage - should it be near plate voltage or much lower?

I've seen differing opinions on this (excluding tubes where the screen is limited to a low voltage anyway). Some believe that distortion is reduced with one the screen voltage equal or close to plate voltage, others believe the screen should be much lower than the plate voltage for best results. I find it confusing! Anyone have opinions on this?
