About 70% of the tone of the sound and the details that the power amp provides comes from this driver tube. It is absolutely critical in its choice. I would gut it out and build a low voltage power supply with Schottkey rectifiers and large electrolytic supplies feeding a 26 before I would settle for a 5687.
Also, those microphonic tubes, like my 01A for example, aren't so bad in the driver stage position as they are in the line stage position. I think any of those choices in DHT driver is preferable here. Don't you want to have better sound that the pedestrian high-end market CAN'T give you? It'll be worth doing.
