Thanks, Henry.I take your point about the risk of instabilitry. I was hoping that a simple series regulator using a MOSFET with a reference voltage on its gate (maybe using a stack of zeners or VR tubes in series, to give 400v) would not be too prone to instability. If an error amplifier can be avoided, that should eliminate much of the potential cause of instability.
From what (I think) I understand, a MOSFET used like this should have adequate gain to provide a sufficiently stable voltage at the source for feeding the screens of PP pentodes in class AB. I plan on using MOSFET regulation, also, for the bias supply. I'm hoping this arrangement should maintain constant screen and bias voltages, regardless of how hard the amp is driven, even when the line voltage varies (within sensible limits). All this assumes adequate reserve voltage for the MOSFETs to work.
