Hi.I think you are talking about another noise voltage generated by EMI/RFI - differential noises (DNs) across the L & N lines, which I did not mentoned in my above post.
If my assumption is correct, there will be some entirely different way to tackle such noises. Digital equipment, e.g. switch mode power supplies, where we can find everywhere indoor, in battery chargers for our digital cameras, camcorders, PCs, LCD PC monitors & TVs, etc etc etc, all generate differential noises onto the powerlines.
The common way to eliminate such DNs, as per Butler Winding, a DN chokes manufacturer, is to insert two separate inline DN chokes
to the powerline, one on L & other on N line to block the DNs from entering the load.As differential noises are generated ACROSS the L & N powerlines, not across the L or N lines & common ground path like common mode noises, the logical way to to block them from entering the load by the inline DN inductors as explained above & drain them away by a bleeding capacitors installed across the L & N lines upstream of the DN chokes.
That's why in most, if not all, inline noise filters, we can see
bleeding capacitors are always there upstream of the CM chokes (which can be also design-built as a DN choke, two in one).
The DNs will be 'shorted' from the L line to the N line, via the
bleeding capacitor(s).As I mentioned in my post above, if the two common mode chokes are so design-built to generate enough leakage flux between the L & N inline coils, the DNs can be drained out via the leakage flux. So extra inline differential noise chokes are not needed.
So "independant return path" theory holds as CM noises drain away via the common ground (hence common mode) & differential noises are bypassed via the bleeding capacitor(s) from L line to N line without any conflict.
