While I would not trust myself to certain serious repairs, I feel comfortable enough to replace parts, I'm learning about checking and tweaking bias, etc. Nothing against amp techs at all (my Music Reference RM9 stereo amp, for instance, is with an excellant amp tech right now, as it needs work beyond my abilities at this time), but I would rather tweak my guitar amps myself (and also will be doing an Audible Illusions mod at some point, though the CAT preamp I've had a few months kills it so much that I'm in no rush to get around to that mod.)Next up: completely rebuilding a modded 70's Traynor amp I've had for a few years (turned into a wonderful Marshall clone by the previous tech, but it's got old parts and some mediocre at that, want to rebuild the board, new sockets, etc), putting new filter caps in my vinatage Hiwatt (still sounds very good, but I'm sure those 27 year old electrolytics must not be operating at their peak anymore), as well as a handmade Marshall clone built in 1985 (a FRED amp, #4 of 50, it only does one thing, but if you like distorted vintage Marshalls, it's pretty amazing, Eats tubes, heavy duty plate voltage. Has some light hum now, think it needs new electrolytics.)
