You are not incorrect. If you care about the -3db point of the high-pass filter created by the RC network formed with a coupling cap, then you must use the formula you quoted, not the one previously quoted. Knowing C without R is not useful. (There will always be an R to reference the output of the driver or voltage amplifier to ground. Or R is equal to the input impedance of the driven device.) For example, an 0.22uF cap in conjunction with R = 500K ohms will give you essentially the same -3db point as an 0.1uF coupling cap in conjunction with R = 1M.
