Put them in right at the tube socket pins and one likely source of trouble will be advoided.

Later, once it's all working 100%, you can try taking them out, but I wouldn't bother myself.

Tubes such as these can oscllate at hundreds of megahertz - and cause all sorts of non-obvious sonic problems (hums, buzzes, just generally bad sound quality) you have no chance to fault find with normal audio test equipment - believe me - I've been there!
