So you will definitely need a headphone amp.

Volume pot only determines the load given to the source.
It will not increase gain at all ...
Unless you get a transformer volume control which
have the option of 3 & 6dB gain - on some anyways.
Since you're in UK - S&B TX-102 is the best.

Other than that I am of no use to you.
I am not a headphone user so I'm out of my element.
