In time, yes. Like most everybody, I have neither infinite financial resources nor infinite time. The reason for the 'study' is that I am planning to build a preamplifier with tone controls. Since the Baxandal tone circuit has a loss (20 dB) in the pass band, I need and overall gain of 20 or so, split over two stages. The output driver needs to have low Rp, hence tubes like the 46 and 12B4. The 'input' tube only drives the Baxandal tone circuit, so higher Rp and mu are acceptable (e.g., the 37 and ECC99).
Not sure what to do at this point. The DHTs are the clear winners for first stage (based solely on distortion measurements), but the directly heated aspect is a real pain.
I built up a test 'preamp' that allows switching between various output tubes (26, 31, 46, 112A) with a rotary switch. Output levels from all tubes were adjusted to be the same. I can't say that one 'sounded' significantly better or worse than the other. The 112A MAY have been a bit 'dark' - whatever that means. Other than that, it was microphonics that differentiated the tubes.
