You want to get low distortion and stability in a generator..Dont get a cheap B&K or entry level heathkit or a tenma becuase that defeats the purpose..You can buy milspec or industrial spec generators on ebay for 75 dollars or less used or you can find a nice tube HP like I have at a ham swap for about 25 dollars.You need a sine and square wave function..A solid state unit is good to because your not looking for sonics or depth but you are looking for signals of sine and SQ waves to inject.
When you buy a scope get at least a 50mhz dual trace if you can..The reason I say that is they arent much any more and you can do some cd player work or tuner work if you have a better scope in the future.
