Hi:
The coupling cap and the grid resistor form a HP filter.By lowering the value of the coupling cap, you have raised the low end rolloff of the amp. This would give less deep subbass, which may be why it sounded cleaner to you and opened up the highs.
Running both in parallel would raise the capacitance value, giving a lower rolloff/more subbass.
