Yes, when I stated "across the terminals" I just meant to indicate that the cap would be in parallel with the battery supply; I did not mean literally across the terminals. In most cases where I have seen caps used in this manner, the caps are nearest to or at the load, probably for bypass or decoupling, as you state. I am embarrassed to admit where I was previously confused on this issue, so I won't. Thanks for your input.

In this case, I am thinking about using a battery supply for the clock in a DAC. This is said to sound better than a separate power supply dedicated to the clock. I do know it's cheaper than building or buying a separate supply, and I will try it.
