Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

Ah, thank you, I just realized from your post that I've been....

...focusing on the wrong problem; with subcrit L ripple is a problem, but with critical L the more important issue is slew rate vs. ringing and weird waveforms. It is very good to hear from yet another source that LC input is superior - at least with tube rectifiers - I have decided to commit to the center-tapped secondary two tube diode full wave circuit; it seems the best of all; and from another poster I found out that the problem of low DCR in the power tx secondary frying the tube diodes from huge current peaks can be overcome by parralelling the tube diodes, so that's no longer an issue (although if the first inductor is large enough H the huge surge should be prevented, but the ratio to the capacitor comes into play there also). I DO have an old oscilloscope I can dust off and CAN make a square wave generator to drive the PS, I just haven't gotten there yet in terms of time, and haven't felt driven to work this out on the bench yet because I didn't have clarity on enough details. Feedback like yours is very helpful, though, I'm far closer now to having a clear picture of how to proceed experimentally. And, it may yet turn out that some sort of exotic rule for LC ratios, whether rational or irrational number based (yes, the ratio would always be an approximation of an irrational number anyway, but it's getting in the right ballpark that matters) might end up being very useful indeed. And I will use the modeling software first, it might just give the right hint of the right direction and save huge amounts of time. Also, I just got my coil winder and high voltage breakdown tester from Singapore, so that's a big step toward making this much more fun than aggravation. Thanks. :)
