I use a CCS fed VR in my preamp, but I do it the other way around - CCS then resistor then VR.I went that way around because before I installed the VR I had an active shunt regulator in its place and I didn't like the idea of an active CCSS feeding an active regulator. My concerns appear to have been completely unfounded as I have used CCS / shunt regs several times since and had no problems.
