Where did you get the schematic for it? I build a 417A into a 6GK5 phono preamp that sounds awesome. In my opinion try running up the B+ another 100VDC or so. Mo more! That might tighten up the bass. I had the same issue with a tranny coupled 6J5 preamp. I kept the B+ around 210 volts when the schematic called for 250VDC. When I increased the voltage it was all there. Tight bass, clean highs! Sometimes when these guys design circuits by using the specs of the tube from a manual it might run the tube at its best operating point for longevity but not for sound. Worth a try!
