A promised addendum on ripple for mikeyb et all

I do not have a theory--- I search out, find, and employ the best possible performance, reliability, and build quality. I quickly invent anything I need that does not YET exist.

I consider-- in most cases-- NOT HAVING a problem as superior to "solving" it. Life can be a continuum of "solutions"-- or it can be a continuum of NOT NEEDING solutions. The arguments between these two points of view will outlive us all. There are also the "glass half-full", and the "glass half-empty" crowds. These arguments are always pointless.

I apologize for my assumption that 120HZ. ripple would be mostly dealt with by the designer before it leaves the LCLC setup-- we are seeing a lot of discussion on how even a small (.01uf, etc.) cap. can aid choke-operation, and may reduce ripple before it goes into the first choke. This is unnecessary to a PROPER design, because the right values, brands, constructions, and locations of the chokes & caps used on the rectifier will eliminate your ripple component right there... and it should do a whole lot more!

I tend to regard both ripple and hum as components from same source: the 120 V.A.C. line-- with its 60HZ. (endemic) and 120 HZ. (rectifier) effects. What counts is that they both should not make it past the LCLC setup-- and this is done by doing all of this right. Both 60HZ. and 120HZ. components-- and multiples of these-- will still be present all throughout the amplifier in minute quantities again-- after the LCLC-- because they will re-generate from both layout problems and rectification effects of various components and lengths of wiring and componentry! The elimination of ripple by a "notch" filter at the LCLC is not the whole story-- amplifier-wide. Everywhere you go in the amplifier-- you are on the lookout for both of these.... and much more.

Sometimes you resort to an R.F. choke right before a usage-point-- with an attached film-cap.-to-ground there. The properties of the grounding system used for the negative side of this small cap. is absolutely critical to the amplifiers ability to "time" musical information-- and to the local reduction of both ripple and hum... WITHOUT affecting the TIMING of musical information-- which is a dynamic, moving set of targets.
