They would much rather make you buy a new digital camera every 6 months. Yes, what you describe could be done but it's against marketing and the code of greed now in power. If TI can make a 6 x 6 cm CCD for the space telescope then why can't they make one for pro photographers. CCDs have to be cooled and kept at a cold temp for good results and syncing it to your existing mechanical shutter system is a route that electronic engineers don't want to venture down. They would much rather make it 1000 times more complicated. Don't put a lot of money in a digital camera! They are obsoleteing them at an alarming pace. Almost as bad as obsoleteing people.
