It is the quality of the metal in the laminations M4, M6, Cobalt, etc. It is in the skill of the winder and the quality of the winding equipment, the interleaving of the windings, the quality of the silver or copper for the windings, the VA (volt amp) ratings, quietness and regulation on power transformers, the frequency response and distortion overload points on output transformers and I dare say, sound quality.There are only a handfull of good quality winders left. Magnequest, ElectroPrint, Lundahl, Tamura (is it still around?). Good ones are usually expensive.
