well, IF "I = X times Y to the Z power" is what you mean, solve for Z.
I am taxing my memory here, but I am sure I'll be corrected if I am wrong!1) divide both sides by X:
I/X = Y^Z
2) take the log (any flavor of log you like; I like base 10) of both sides to get rid of that nasty exponent:
log (I/X) = log (Y^Z)
log (I/X) = log Y * log Z
[log (I/X) = log I - log X, FWIW]
3) solve for Z
log Z = (log (I/X))/log Y
Z = 10^[log (I/X)/log Y]
I think.
