Hi.for phonostage, & the like LOW signal front gain stages with cathode shorted direct to ground. So not cap & no resistor in the signal path. This is gridleak bias through a large gridleak resistor.
Only when the signal level is too small enough to induce grid currents significant enough to harm the sound.
I am really tempted to build a phonostage with non-NFB RIAA whereby
BOTH the 1st & 2nd stage can go with gridbias, with cathodes grounded. It reportedly sounds pretty good vs other conventional biasing methods.
