triode strapping wins - again! this time with guitar....

...amp; I had built my son Max a 6L6 output guitar amp with preamp overdrive, reverb, etc, but had kept the screen at B+2 for volume. Then, today, while Max was playing it after another tweak, it suddenly hit me: what the heck am I doing not triode-strapping it? I grabbed it from him for three minutes, took B+2 off the screen, strapped the screen to the plate with 110 ohms, gave it back. Wow. It sounded so much nicer, yummy, and when Max cranked it and got huge sustain, I mean he could put the guitar down and lean back and relax and the tone would just keep going, you could hear the harmonic(s) singing over the fundamental.....really, really nice. Haven't had time to find out how to visualize the harmonics on my cheap scope yet, so will be interested to find out whether we're hearing mostly 2nd or whether there's 3rd and above there also. My next step is to add a "gig" stage, London Power Scaling type circuit, so Max can plug in more speakers to go from practice volume to gig volume without the tone changing. What fun. Am also going to add in a mic preamp, switchable into different stages of the circuit, so Max can have a mic clean, distorted and/or reverbed, mixed with the guitar. heh heh heh I wish hifi were this easy.
