I built a gainclone originally on a piece of wood and then in a copper case. I can hear no difference in the sound. I also used std no name components originally and updated those with more expensive caps and resistors later. They made some small diffeence (not neccessarily better just different) but definitely not worh the amount of money I spent. Build it cheaply first and then see whether you want to tweak it after.I do think you'll enjoy the sound though. I replaced an $800 Rotel amp with the gainclone and the difference in quality was astounding. It's easy to build and there's plenty of help on the chip amp forum if you run into problems.
