"That's not to say that the pursuit of the "Absolute Sound" isn't an interesting diversion, but I've come to the conclusion it's not a mandatory aspect of being an..."audio hobbyist").That last line is probably best says it. If you are a DIY person, (theme of this forum, right?) it carries to every aspect of your life, not just audio. You are curious, investigative, exploring untried ideas, and so on. Making it sound better is simply a goal post you run towards. The fun is in learning and sharing, but also in achieving the goal, however humble it may be. The satisfaction is in the listening.
The great thing about being an audio hobbyist is you can learn a lot about things to helps you elsewhere. Trouble shoot wiring problems on an old car? no problem, once you have learned how to handwire and debug an amplifier of your own design. Build a deck? Once you have built speakers, no problem. Build or fix anything? no problem.Once you are a veteran audio DIY builder who has learned the methods of hobby support groups on the internet, the vast resources avaialable allow one to do almost anthing with your mind and hands in syncronicity.
