I suspect ipods and their kin from other manufacturers use very low grade analogue stages, and in some cases poorly implemented software/codecs. It's kinda like taking a CD boombox and saying, this sounds crap, so CD is a poor quality storage medium.
If you have good signal processing hardware, you can get good sound from MPeg3 and the other high-bitrate lossy codecs, so i don't think it's meaningful to compare PC-based playback of MP3 with an ipod.
Then again, there are good Walkmans (like the dual capstan PLL ones), and a whole pile of cheap junky personal cassette players for under $5.
