Sony reel to reel models - which to buy which to avoid

I know this guy who says he has an old sony reel to reel in his attic. Doesn't know the model. He says I can go look at it. But, I have no idea of the sony model line and don't know which ones might be worth investing some $$ in versus which ones I should avoid. Any suggestions are welcome. I did search the archives but didn't come up with any real specifics re: sony decks. Thanks. Norm
