We have a cat, she climbs everything, plus forced hot air heat is a tad dusty, even with a HEPA hipo-allergenic filter.

The cat especially likes to perch on the Levinson 33 and 33H mono amps. Thus, towels prevent not only dust but cat dander from getting inside the amps.

The cat is very good about not going after speaker grilles, and it is in a cat's nature to climb. The towels provide a medium that is both win-win for the cat and I.
