Ironbut,The tape heads are "hardwired" to the input of the tape preamp. It's just the output of that section that gets sent to the monitor amplification when the monitor switch is in the "tape" position. When the monitor switch is in the "source" position, you hear whatever input you are using to record.
Regarding mods to the record electronics, I only replaced coupling caps.
