I've used isopropyl alcohol for decades, with no adverse effects. *Maybe* the key is to use enough to clean the roller without soaking it. Of course, it could be that you have the newer environmentally friendly type of rubber, in which case, it'll break down just as fast as cheap rubber bands, even without alcohol, regardless of what you use on it.
