Teresa, I have several Naks, NAD6300 and Tandbergs and agree with you.For me, the choice between thousands of pre-recorded cassettes at $.50 a pop and several DVD-A at $15 is obvious.
The best NAK for playback in my experience is CR7, followed by ZX-9. Well worth investing money in.
For casual listening, Onkyo 2800 and 2700 are awesome, the same sound signature as Naks for less than $100.Also, I use HHB 830 to transcribe tapes to CD-R. In my view it is a lossy process, but prolons the life of Naks for casual listening.
Also, using a decent cable and plugging deck into isolation transformer makes huge difference. As well as using maple butcher's block underneath. Those are the tricks I did not know when decks were in their zenit in the 1980s. Now, I adore them.
Also, there is a creative way to use music servers. Create playlists 45minutes long and record mix tapes. The tapes sound awesome.
