Thanks for the response. Yes, it would be necessary to put a bit of felt inside the enclosure for the additional head to make enough contact with the tape. I know for sure it's possible to make a tape delay machine using a dual cassette deck that's been modded so that a specially made tape (actually just a tape that goes through an extra-long enclosure) goes through both cassette decks (partition in the middle has been cut out). This setup would have one playback/record head in each cassette deck, and the feedback from one goes to the other after going through a pot. but it must be possible to greatly simplify this design by simply adding a second record/playback head and as you said a felt wadge pressing up from the cassette enclosure.
