I guess you are right. It is a case where one company (Nakamichi) was doing it right and everybody else was doing it wrong.The only exceptions were companies who used Nakamichi as their OEM (Kyocera, Onkyo)
Often, being technically ingenious in mediocre environment is not enough to suceed in business. Technological landscape is littered with good designs with poor marketing. Nakamichi is an exception, the swam against the stream successfully.
