I'd like to thank everybody for their help and ask a few newbie questions. So, I cleaned the hell out of the deck, vacuumed the inside, etc. I used some contact cleaner on the pinch roller, and a bit of Hammond oil. The roller now snaps in place when I hit play. However, when I hit fast or stop, it doesn't snap back, it just slides back slower that it should. Oh well--I'll get the service manual next week and get to work.
My questions are these:
Can I leave the tape on the machine for a day or so? I haven't set up the deck in my main system yet, so I'm just using headphones and don't have time to listen to a whole tape at a time.
Any suggestions on how to avoid rewinding or fast forwarding all the way to the end of the reel? Do I need to get used to watching it until it gets close and then winding the rest of the way by hand?
