1/2" vs. 1/4" tape? heads...?

Hi

I just had a revox b77 serviced, and when I went to pick it up, I had a confusing interaction with the owner of the place. He was telling me that the deck I have is for 1/2" tape, and that I would have trouble playing 1/4" tape on it....when I tried to press him, he declined to really stand by his statement, saying I should "just try it out, and if it works, great."

I'm no expert certainly, but I have played a fair amount of 1/4" tape on this deck, to no ill effect...and I hope to continue doing so...

Question is, this guy IS supposed to be an expert, so is there a chance that this deck is indeed for 1/2 tape? am I missing some important part of the recordings that I am playing on it? how can I tell if its for 1/4 or 1/2 inch tape?
