Nakamichi uses their own tapes to calibrate their decks in the factory and the equivalent to these three different types of tapes are TDK AD for TYPE-I, TDK SA for TYPE-II and TDK MA for TYPE-IV. If you use these three type of tapes, the result should be optimized. The tapes that Nakamichi uses in their factory are basically those of the above made by TDK as well.In the LX-5 user manual, there should be a section/table that show you all the types of tapes that are compatible to those that Nakamichi used in the factory setup. If you select those within the table, the result should be very good. If you plan to use those tapes that are not within the table the recording equalization might need to be re-adjusted to match that particular tape. Nakamichi does not has user-adjustable recording equalization feature externally on the LX-5. Hope this help.
