Hi, Zodo:I own a regular TD-20-A (not the "special equalization" version).
These decks were once among the best sounding of all semi-pro machines in the late seventies/early eighties. The TD-20-A SE was their best open reel machine and the high speed version was a top performer in its day, quite competitive with the best of the ReVox decks, in fact. Some swear that they also sounded much better than any ReVox consumer deck. I tend to agree with that observation.
Tandberg, as far as I know, is out of business, except for their computer drive manufacturing division.
Parts, if available, will be very expensive, and naturally, somewhat difficult to obtain.
My experience with a Tandberg TD-20-A is one involving quirky lubrication issues and more. They are not made with separate circuit cards for servicing, as were the ReVoxes (A and B-77 series). There are quite a few problems with them, but overall, they are nicely made machines.
If you are somehow unable to resolve what is affecting the performance of your machine, consider contacting a friend of mine in nearby El Cerrito, CA, Adam Liberman, of LIBERMAN SOUND. Adam is quite expert when it comes to tape recorder maintenance and may have some insight on the issue of replacement or relapping the heads in your particular deck.
There are also a number of professional head re-lapping services which are well known and their advertisements often appear in the back pages of Tape Op magazine and in others. In your case, relapping would easily be cheaper than complete replacement, as long as you are set up to remove/reinstall and re-align them.

Best of luck!
