I have used the DA-45HR many times in a recording studio environment. Although the Panasonics (SV3700/3800) were most popular many people felt the Tascams to have more robust and stable transport mechanisms that didnt eat tape as easily. I never quite figured out why but personally I feel DAT, even 16/44 sounds better than CDR. The 45 HR is a good machine but you really wanna find one with low hours on it. There are people around who fix DATS (google DAT repair). I believe there may be an "hours counter" on the back of the unit, or in the soft menu. As a 24 bit recorder I felt the sound quality was better than just about anything I had ever heard, but as I said, I'm partial to DAT. I can't vouch for the converters though as I only used the machine with ouboard AD/DA's (Lavry). I'm assuming they're not garbage. This was the Tascam flagship DAT at the time and I doubt they would fit it with less than decent converters. I'm guessing here, but it probably went out of production, I'd say around the year 2002. DONT FORGET, THIS MACHINE RUNS AT DOUBLE SPEED TO RECORD 24 BIT, SO A 60 MINUTE TAPE ONLY RECORDS 30 MINUTES OF PROGRAM. I miss the sound of DAT but not the headaches, good luck.
