Sounds like a belt or idler wheel problem. It might need to be replaced or just cleaned up. Check out Vintage Electronics. Bob has a little booklet called " Refurbishing Sony Reel to Reels" pretty cheap as I recall. It has step by step instructions on what you need to do to find out if there are any real issues with your Sony. I covers the cleaning and lubing all the bearings , switches etc. Your in luck because it is a general guide for most Sonys but specificly for your machine. I used it to clean up my Tc640 which is way different but the guide was still allot of help. While your at it, you might as well order a belt set for your 355 also cheap and if you like, he also has service manuals and some parts. Angelfire.com also has some pretty good maintanence tips.
