This is what you you are trying to emulate. Note that it has advantages and disadvantages. It helps from a designer's standpoint, to create a sort of theoretically perfect environment for testing the actual head response and EQ circuit performance. But it does not allow for checking azimuth errors or head gap wear, factors that come in to play only when tape is running over the head. Ultimately you would want to run an alignment tape as well as using the flux loop, to make sure the head is properly aligned.
