Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

The Dragon's a great deck I'm sure.

... but i've never heard one. Reportedly the CR-7 is the best sounding deck they've ever produced.

Personally, I'm ecstatically happy with my BX-300. I think it sounds downright fantastic, though it doesn't enjoy the cult status of the CR-7 or the Dragon. It also doesn't share the huge price tag. The recordings produced by it sound, to my ears, identical to the original if you use decent tape stock. It also squeezes every last bit of quality out of a tape during playback.

The thing about virtually all 3-head Naks is that tapes you record on them will sound a bit dull when played back on anything but a Nak. That's because of the narrower record head gap the Naks have.

If you want a deck for superb playback and only want to play the tapes back on the same deck, Naks are great. I usually do my recording on my TASCAM 122 or TEAC C-2x though, so the tapes will be compatible with other decks.

Other great 3-head decks I would consider are:

TEAC Z-7000, Z-9000,
TASCAM 122,
Onkyo Integra series,
Harman/Kardon CD491,
Sony TC-K555, TC-K666 or TC-K777 (I had a Sony TC-K555 that was terrific, by the way.)
or if you can afford it, Revox.

The Onkyo, H/K or Sony decks will probably give you the best bang for your buck ratio.

Good luck!
Bobbo :-)
