Re: what Sony es deck to buy ?

Hi Bob,

Decks to measure up to a ZX-9 or CR-7 is a tall order - properly set up, those are reference machines using Niro Nakamichi's proprietary technology, for which only SACD, high-end LP and good R2R is a match.

I would suggest a dual-capstan dolby-S equipped modern deck such as the Sony TCKA3ES/6ES (roughly identical) or (rather hard to find) a Pioneer CTS-740S or CTS-830S or finally a TEAC V-6030S/V-8030S.

I mention these units as they are realistically "findable". You could 'try' to find a Sony TCKA9ES or a Pioneer CT-95(aka 1100L), but these were practically made to order.

These are all fantastic decks capable of utterlly stable mechanisms, and performance in the top league. Above all, they feature Dolby S which, well implemented, has to be heard to be believed.

If you are looking for unusual decks from a technology point of view, I would suggest a Technics RS-AZ7 features a thin film head developed for digital compact cassette and responds to changes in flux level instead of flux density) and the incredibly rare Pioneer CT-670D, a beautiful three header that undertakes calibration, noise reduction and many other functions in the digital domain with dual Legato Link ADC/DACs. Both of these decks sound exceptional.

Good luck!! MARC
