I'd suggest recording/playing back some kind of a frequency response sweep or set of tones from a generator with a relatively constant output (vs. frequency) to see how flat the HF response is (from 1khz on up).

This will check not only the heads but how "correct" the equalization adjustments are. Having said that however, the test doesn't discriminate between a problem with the two.
