"half-track" versus "2-track"

More commonly this is referred to as "2-track" -- a 1/4" tape with two tracks going in the same direction. "Half-track" was a mono format: 1/4" tape with two tracks going in opposite directions, so you *could* flip the tape after it reached the end of the reel. And "Quarter-track" was the stereo version of "half track" -- 1/4" tape with four tracks total, two going in each direction.
