I strongly recommend that you talk to your daughter about it before
buying anything. Some things make great surprise gifts but electronics
definitely do not. She may not need her own equipment at this point if
the school makes theirs available for that purpose. If she really does
need something, she may already know what she wants. She certainly
knows what other students are using and what's compatible with the
school's audio lab equipment. Also talk to her instructors at the
music school and get their suggestions.

At the very least, do some more research about the available analog
and digital recording options. There are many choices other than
cassette decks and mini-disc recorders. For example, you can get a
superb digital audio interface that will work with a laptop computer
for less than $400. She would be be able to make her own CD-Rs and
MP3s that way.
