People on this forum suggest that Maxell is better, but I did not find this to be so myself. I used Maxell XL II and MX and MX-S vs. TDK SA, SA-X and MA and MA-X. All were very close.I ultimately used TDK MA-X when I wanted to make a very good recording or later to Sony Metal ES. Sometimes I used Denon DR-7 and 8. I never used the metal case ones.
I addresssed primarily sound and smoothness. None had or have mechanical issues.
I use a Nakamichi 682ZX.
